Recycling at RC Landfills

WHAT IS RECYCLED?

WHITE GOODS & APPLIANCES

The Department is a state certified appliance recycler.  The Department’s Waste Recycling Program recycles all types of white goods and appliances.  These items require special handling by Program staff so that regulated materials such as Freon, oils, mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are removed as required. In 2007, the Program serviced and recycled 8,642 appliances. (Video coming soon)

FREON

Freon is extracted from refrigeration units at the site.  In 2004, Freon was removed from 2,635 refrigeration units and recycled (sold for reuse). (Video coming soon)

OIL

Used oil is removed from refrigerator compressors, washing machines, lawn mowers and other small equipment.  In 2004, 302 gallons of used oil were removed and recycled through the Waste Recycling Program.

ELECTRONIC SCRAP (CRTs and EDs)

Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) are the leaded glass portion of televisions and computer monitors.  Department staff disassembles these items to remove the CRTs and electrical circuit boards from the waste stream.  In 2007, the Department recycled 9,911 televisions and computer monitors.  Electronic Devices (EDs) are one of the newly regulated waste streams which includes most electronic items such as cell phones, computers, games consoles, VCR, Stereos, and hundreds more electronic devices common to every home.  These devices are now recycled through the program and kept out of the landfill.  In 2007 the Program recycled 7,685 electronic devices. TIRES

Tires are accepted at the Blythe, Lamb Canyon and Badlands Sanitary Landfills.  The California Integrated Management Board regulates tires as a special waste in California.  In 2004 the Program recycled nearly 340 tons of tires, thereby saving valuable landfill space.

METAL RECYCLING

Metal is the main recycling stream generated through the Waste Recycling Program. Numerous metal items including household appliances, swing sets, health equipment, bicycles, auto parts, fencing, piping, structural steel, shelving, and more are brought to the landfill for disposal.

Once regulated materials are removed, this recyclable waste stream is crushed with onsite equipment and loaded in 40-yard containers and transported to a local recycler. In 2007 the program diverted and recycled 2,036 tons of metal. (Video coming soon)

FUTURE WASTE RECYCLE PARK

The success of the Waste Recycling Program sparked the creation of the new “Waste Recycle Park” at the Lamb Canyon Landfill.  The Waste Recycle Park provides safer disposal services for all self haul customers, enables increased recycling efforts, improves working conditions and safety for Program staff and when completed will provide consistent household hazardous waste collection for Riverside County residents.  Construction on the first phase of the “state-of –the-art” park began at Lamb Canyon Landfill in 2005 and the second phase is scheduled to begin construction in 2008.
